Reading Question?????

I am new  to second grade coming from kindergarten. I was wondering how you use class sets of chapter books? Do you read them to the class and have them follow along or do they read it to themselves and then answer questions? Any suggestions would be very helpful.

  1. Hi Dina, I have taught 2nd grade for most of 15 years. It's my favorite grade. :) The latest reading research has moved away from whole-class reading sets to small groups focused on a strategy or reading level. If I had a whole-class set of novels, I'd probably just divvy them out among my teacher friends. Good luck!

  2. You might have your students who can read the book fluently enough (less than 5 tricky words) read them all together as a Literature Circle with questions to answer...or even let them write the questions and share them with the group for answering. I do that with my students who are reading above grade level. Wendi is right, tho', no more whole class reading. Do you have Accelerated Reader?

  4. This will also be my first year teaching 2nd as well. I was told the same thing, that book sets are really good for small reading groups.
